Celebrating in the Streets: Park(ing) Day 2021

An illustrated streestcape with a parklet and the words Parking Day on the sidewalk.

Next month, the world will celebrate Park(ing) Day, the day when people around the globe will repurpose street parking spaces into tiny parks and places for art, play, and activism. In order to support this effort, Spin will grant organizations $1,000 each toward creating a Park(ing) Day installation in any city. Any interested organizations can apply here. We will be accepting applications through August 15, after which we will announce the winners.

We’re looking for creative ideas that will transform empty parking spots into community spaces for people. Take a look at Park(ing) Day’s manual for inspiration. Or you can also check out the Spin-sponsored parklet competition from Park(ing) Day 2019 in Denver.

Our streets are the most abundant public spaces in our cities and yet those streets primarily move and store cars. This past year we really got to see just how easy and important it is to transform underutilized places like parking spots into places where people can eat, drink, and simply enjoy being outside.

As part of our mission to create a world of 15-minute cities, we are committed to making our streets more than just thoroughfares for cars. Part of helping people access important destinations in their community in 15 minutes or less is creating destinations, like parklets, near their homes. Open space is essential in urban environments and parklets are a creative, inexpensive, and fun way to create more. Parklets, like other traffic calming measures, also make streets safer and more livable by reducing traffic speeds.

We look forward to seeing many creative ideas for making our streets more people-oriented -- instead of car-oriented -- places.

Stay tuned for more information on how we’re partnering with Park(ing) Day and Better Block Foundation for Park(ing) Day 2021.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
